Gel vs. Acrylic vs. Dip Nails in Lewisville, TX: Which One Is Right for You?

If you've been staring at a nail salon menu wondering what the actual difference is between gel, acrylic, dip, and all the variations in between — this is the post you've been looking for. At Nail Luxury on Hebron Parkway, we get this question every single week. Here's the honest answer.

Why It Actually Matters Which One You Choose

The right nail enhancement for your lifestyle is not the one your best friend gets. It's the one that matches your nail health, your schedule, your activity level, and how much maintenance you actually want to keep up with.

The wrong choice leads to lifting at the cuticle by week two, damage to the natural nail, or paying for a fill when what you really needed was a full removal and reset. The right choice means your nails look good for three to four weeks with minimal drama.

Here's how to think through it.

Gel Manicure (Rubber Base) — $60

Gel applied directly to the natural nail over a rubber base coat. No enhancement, no length, no powder — just a highly flexible, chip-resistant polish that cures under UV light and lasts significantly longer than regular lacquer.

Best for: Clients who want a clean, low-profile look on natural nails with maximum longevity. Clients who don't want the bulk of an enhancement. Clients who move their hands a lot.

Lasts: Three to four weeks on most clients in Lewisville's climate, assuming proper aftercare.

Weakness: It won't add length or structure. If your nails break easily, gel alone won't fix that.

Russian Manicure + Gel — $50 for the Russian Manicure service

The Russian Manicure is a dry, e-file technique that preps the cuticle area more thoroughly than a water-soak service. The result is a cleaner margin at the base of the nail and a finish that holds longer because the prep is more precise.

Best for: Clients who want the longest possible wear on natural nails. Clients who notice their gel starts lifting near the cuticle before the three-week mark.

Lasts: Typically longer than a standard gel manicure — closer to four weeks — because the cuticle area is cleaner at the start.

Note: Nail Luxury is one of the few Lewisville salons offering Russian Manicure with technicians trained specifically in the technique. It's not widely available in the DFW area at this quality level.

Builder Gel — $60 (full set) / $55 (fill)

Builder gel is a thicker gel product applied to the natural nail to add structure, strength, and some length without the weight of acrylic. It's flexible, cures under UV, and is gentler on the natural nail than acrylic.

Best for: Clients who want length and structure but don't want the rigidity of acrylic. Clients whose natural nails are thin or prone to breaking. Clients who want a more natural-feeling enhancement.

Lasts: Three to four weeks to fill.

Polygel — $65 (full set) / $50 (refill)

Polygel is a newer hybrid product — somewhere between acrylic and gel in texture. It's applied with a brush and a slip solution rather than a liquid monomer, which means no strong odor and a lighter finished nail.

Best for: Clients who want acrylic-level structure without the smell or heaviness. Clients doing this service for the first time who want something a bit more forgiving to work with.

Lasts: Three to four weeks to fill.

GelX — $65

GelX is a soft gel extension system using pre-shaped gel tips adhered with gel adhesive and cured under UV. Unlike hard gel or acrylic, GelX can be soaked off rather than filed down, which is gentler on the natural nail at removal.

Best for: Clients who want length but want to avoid damage during removal. Clients who cycle on and off enhancements and need something they can remove cleanly.

Lasts: Three to four weeks.

Acrylic — $40 (fill) / $50 (full set)

The classic. Liquid monomer and powder polymer mixed and applied to the nail, hardening through a chemical reaction. Acrylic has been the dominant nail enhancement for decades because it's strong, durable, and buildable.

Best for: Clients who want the strongest possible enhancement. Clients with very active hands — labor-intensive work, frequent outdoor activity, sports. Clients who want long nails that won't flex.

Lasts: Two to three weeks to fill; acrylic grows out rather than lifting, so the fill is more about the look than the integrity of the nail.

Limitation: Harder to remove than gel-based systems. Removal should always be done by a professional to avoid damage.

Pink & White (Full Set $55 / Fill $45)

Pink and white acrylic — also called a French acrylic — uses a natural pink base with a white tip built directly into the acrylic rather than painted on. The French look is permanent and doesn't chip.

Best for: Clients who want a classic French manicure that doesn't require repainting every week. Clients who want a polished, professional look that holds up over time.

Dip Nails — $40 (full set, natural nail)

Dip powder involves applying a bonding agent and then dipping the nail into a fine colored powder, which hardens without UV light. No enhancement, no tips — just a strengthened, colored natural nail.

Best for: Clients who want something between nail polish and a gel manicure. Clients who want color with added strength but don't want length. Clients who are sensitive to UV lamps.

Lasts: Three to four weeks with proper application.

Shellac Manicure — $40

Shellac is a specific brand of gel polish from CND — a hybrid between nail polish and gel that cures under UV. It's thinner than most gel products, which makes it gentler and easier to remove.

Best for: Clients who want a chip-resistant polish that comes off cleanly without heavy filing. Good for clients with thin nails.

How to Choose: A Simple Framework

Natural nail only, want color that lasts: Gel Manicure Rubber Base or Shellac. Want the longest-lasting natural nail service: Russian Manicure. Want length and strength without heaviness: Builder Gel or GelX. Want the strongest possible nail for an active lifestyle: Acrylic. Want structure without the acrylic smell: Polygel. Want a permanent French look: Pink & White. Want color with some strength, no length: Dip Nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch between enhancement types? Yes, but there's usually a removal step involved, and in some cases you'll want to let the nail rest for a week or two before starting a new enhancement. Your tech can look at your current nails and tell you what the cleanest transition looks like.

Which is the least damaging to natural nails? GelX and Builder Gel are generally the gentlest enhancement options. Russian Manicure plus gel is the gentlest option on the natural nail without any enhancement at all.

How often do I need a fill vs. a full new set? For acrylic and builder gel, fills are typically every two to three weeks. If you go longer than four weeks without a fill, a full removal and new set is usually the better option.

Do you do nail art on any of these? Yes. Nail art can be added to any service as a Nail Design add-on. Basic nail art starts at $10 per nail.
